Behind the Scenes
Math teacher and former student reminiscence

Singing statistics

It's been 4 years since Dominique Grice, now a 9th grade student at Philadelphia's Girls High, was in Amy Gottesman's class at Grover Washington Jr. Middle School.

That year, when Amy was guiding the class through their NID service-learning project, math played an important role. The students' project focused on crime and as part of their research they surveyed their peers and used statistics to analyze the data.

When her 5th graders had difficulty, Amy invented a song to bring the lesson home.

The two have stayed in touch over the years. Recently, they met at Amy's house to reminisce about their year together at Grover.

Taking time to listen to someone this holiday season is the mission of the National Day of Listening, an initiative of StoryCorps -- a national oral histories project with which Need in Deed is partnered. Founded by Dave Isay, StoryCorps' mission is to celebrate our shared humanity through stories of everyday life.
